Monday Morning Commute: Adelaide Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue Alerts

Good morning, Canberra. As we begin the work week on Monday, 23 March 2026, commuters should prepare for several significant traffic changes and ongoing infrastructure projects that will impact travel times across the capital. Major arterial roads and several public transport routes are seeing updates today, requiring extra patience during the morning peak.

Major Roadwork Commencing on Adelaide Avenue

Motorists using Adelaide Avenue should be aware of new lane closures starting today. The National Capital Authority has scheduled light pole replacement works that will restrict traffic flow between 23 March and 27 March. Expect lane reductions and a lowered speed limit in the affected areas. These works are expected to cause minor delays for those heading into the Parliamentary Triangle and the City from the southern suburbs.

Commonwealth Avenue and Bridge Renewal

The Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal project continues to be the most significant disruption in the central precinct. The northbound span of the bridge remains closed to all traffic, with all vehicles merged onto the southbound side. General traffic travelling toward Parliament House is reduced to one lane after Albert Street. Additionally, the Light Rail Stage 2A works have resulted in ongoing lane restrictions near Parkes Way. While some weekend lane closures were scheduled to lift at 5:00 AM this morning, residual congestion is highly likely as the network adjusts to the Monday morning volume.

Intersection Upgrades and Closures

Significant disruptions remain at the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue. Intersection upgrade works are currently in progress and are not expected to conclude until early April. Diversions are in place, and drivers are encouraged to use the Monaro Highway or alternative routes to avoid the heavy congestion typically seen at this junction during peak hours. In the City, Bunda Street remains closed between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing for ongoing streetscape upgrades. Diversions through the CBD are active, and motorists should watch for increased pedestrian activity in the area.

Public Transport and Local Updates

Transport Canberra has issued several alerts for bus users today:

  • Belconnen: Bus stop 4415 is closed starting today, Monday, 23 March, and will remain closed until the last service on Wednesday. Passengers should check the Transport Canberra website for the nearest alternative boarding point.
  • Tuggeranong: Bus stop 1279 remains closed as part of ongoing maintenance through 30 March.
  • Monaro Highway: Pavement construction continues at the intersection of Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive. Temporary traffic lights are in place, which may cause intermittent holding of traffic.

We recommend all commuters allow at least an additional 15 to 20 minutes for their journey this morning, particularly if crossing the lake or travelling via Majura. Drive safely and stay tuned for further updates.
