Infrastructure and Road Transport Alerts

The ACT Government has issued a priority notice regarding significant traffic disruptions planned for Thursday, 19 March 2026. As part of the ongoing Light Rail Stage 2A project, construction crews will be installing track slabs and upgrading essential utilities along Commonwealth Avenue. Residents and commuters are advised of the following specific impacts:

  • Commonwealth Avenue: The Parkes Way westbound off-ramp onto Commonwealth Avenue (southbound) will be fully closed from 10:00 pm on Thursday, 19 March, until 4:00 am on Friday, 20 March. Detours will be clearly marked.
  • Lane Reductions: Commonwealth Avenue northbound will be reduced to a single lane between Albert Street (West) and Parkes Way starting from 8:00 pm on Thursday, 19 March. This reduction will remain in place until 5:00 am the following morning.
  • City Center Closures: Bunda Street remains closed to all through traffic between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing due to ongoing precinct upgrade works.
  • Majura Intersection: Continued road closures are in effect at the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue. Intermittent delays are expected as crews perform intersection upgrades.

Suburban Road Maintenance and Resurfacing

Annual road maintenance programs are scheduled for several suburban districts on Thursday, 19 March. These works are weather-dependent and aim to improve road safety and surface longevity:

  • Belconnen: Night works will occur on Belconnen Way with westbound lane closures for approximately 500 meters before the Gungahlin Drive exit from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am. Access to Gungahlin Drive westbound will be restricted during this window.
  • Dickson: Lane closures will be in place on Antill Street between Phillip Avenue and Cowper Street from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm for essential resealing.
  • Mitchell: Baillieu Court will be closed from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am for asphalt patching. Additionally, Flemington Road will see lane closures between Sandford Street and Lysaght Street from 8:00 pm.

Public Transport and Community Facilities

Transport Canberra has notified passengers of service adjustments affecting Route 56. Due to local maintenance, nightly bus diversions will conclude on Thursday, 19 March. Stops 1772 and 2941 on Newcastle Street will be closed from 8:00 pm; passengers are directed to nearby stops on Gladstone Street.

Regarding community amenities, most ACT Government turf sportsgrounds are now closed as part of a scheduled two-week renovation period to prepare surfaces for the winter season. In our public parks, maintenance teams are conducting rabbit control operations at Grevillea District Park and general landscaping at the English Garden. Tree pruning and maintenance activities are also scheduled for the suburbs of Curtin, Duffy, and Rivett throughout the day.
