Official Service Resumptions Following Easter

Following the Easter long weekend, ACT Government services will resume regular operating hours on Tuesday, 7 April 2026. Residents are advised of the following reopenings and schedule adjustments:

  • Libraries ACT: All library branches and return chutes will reopen to the public today, Tuesday, 7 April, following closures from Good Friday through Easter Monday.
  • Domestic Animal Services: The facility on Mugga Lane in Symonston will reopen at 10:00 am this morning for walk-in adoptions and meet-and-greet services. Rangers have continued to operate as normal throughout the holiday period.
  • Waste and Recycling: Household bin collections have returned to the standard Tuesday schedule. Residents whose bins are normally collected on Fridays are reminded that their service was rescheduled to Saturday, 4 April.

Road Closures and Infrastructure Updates

Significant infrastructure projects continue across the Territory, with several major traffic disruptions active this week. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

  • Bunda Street (City): A full closure remains in place between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing due to ongoing precinct upgrade works. This closure is expected to persist until Sunday, 19 April 2026. Detours are clearly marked.
  • Commonwealth Avenue: Northbound traffic is currently reduced to a single lane from the Parkes Way on-ramp to Vernon Circle. This disruption is scheduled to remain in place until late April to facilitate bridge and light rail enabling works.
  • Monaro Highway Upgrade: Pavement construction continues near the Lanyon Drive intersection. Temporary traffic lights are active northbound at the Hume interchange, and off-peak lane closures may occur in both directions.
  • Lennox Gardens: Maintenance crews are beginning a two-week repair project on the granite paths. Pedestrians should follow local signage and exercise caution around worksites.

Community Health and Welfare Advisories

The ACT Government and Federal partners have recently launched several public service initiatives for April 2026:

Medicare Mental Health Check-In

Launched on 1 April, the new Medicare Mental Health Check-In service is now fully operational. Canberrans aged 16 and over can access free, evidence-based mental health support without a GP referral by contacting 1800MEDICARE. This service provides early intervention for mild to moderate distress.

Public Health Reminder

Health officials continue to monitor community health following a measles case alert issued in late February. Residents are urged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to consult a healthcare provider if they exhibit symptoms including fever and a blotchy rash.

Fuel Relief Measures

Motorists are reminded that the three-month fuel excise reduction remains in effect across all Canberra service stations. This measure, which commenced on 30 March, is intended to provide temporary financial relief during the current global supply pressures.
