Public Service Announcement: Skyfire 2026 Coordination

The ACT Government and National Capital Authority advise residents of significant service adjustments and temporary infrastructure changes scheduled for Saturday, 14 March 2026, to facilitate the return of the Skyfire fireworks display. Large crowds are expected around Lake Burley Griffin, and public safety measures will be in effect throughout the day.

Road Closures and Pedestrian Access

To ensure public safety during the festivities, several major arterial roads and thoroughfares will be subject to temporary closures. Residents should plan for delays in the following areas:

  • Commonwealth Avenue Bridge: Partial bridge closures and pedestrian diversions remain in place due to ongoing renewal works. Specifically, the northbound pedestrian crossing on the bridge will be closed on Saturday.
  • Parkes and Parliamentary Triangle: Temporary closures will affect Parkes Place and King Edward Terrace.
  • City Centre: Bunda Street remains closed between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing as part of long-term infrastructure upgrades.

Transport Canberra Service Updates

In a bid to manage traffic congestion, Transport Canberra will provide free travel on all bus and light rail services from 5:00 pm on Saturday, 14 March, until the final service of the night. Passengers are reminded to tap on and off as usual; fares will be recorded at $0.00.

  • Bus Diversions: Due to road closures, the Commonwealth Avenue northbound Regatta Point bus stop will be out of service after 8:00 pm. Following the event, all passengers should proceed to the southbound Regatta Point stop at Albert Street for departures.
  • Light Rail: Increased frequency will be implemented on the Gungahlin to City line to accommodate event attendees.

City Maintenance and Public Health

Standard municipal maintenance continues alongside event preparations. The following advisories remain active for Saturday, 14 March 2026:

  • Mowing Schedule: Crews are active in Central Canberra, including Barton, Lyneham, and Yarralumla, as well as parts of Belconnen and Tuggeranong.
  • Water Quality: Public health alerts remain in effect for several swimming areas. Bargang, Bimbi, Yerra, and Dulwa beaches, along with the Murrays Corner and Tuggeranong Town Park swimming areas, are currently closed to primary contact due to elevated bacteria levels.
  • Infrastructure: Maintenance work is ongoing at the Lower North Weston Dam. Residents are advised to avoid work zones and follow all posted signage.
