Holiday Traffic and Safety Enforcement

As Canberra observes the Easter Monday public holiday on 6 April 2026, commuters and holiday travelers are reminded that double demerit points remain in effect until 11:59 pm tonight. While general office commute volumes may be lower, significant holiday traffic is expected on major arteries as residents return from the long weekend. ACT Policing is maintaining a high-visibility presence to monitor speeding and mobile phone use.

Major Arterial Disruptions

The most significant impact on the road network remains the ongoing Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal Project. Motorists should prepare for the following conditions:

  • The northbound side of the bridge is fully closed to all lanes and the shared path.
  • Traffic is diverted to the southbound side, which is currently operating with two northbound lanes (one for general traffic and one for buses/emergency services) and only one southbound lane for general traffic.
  • The Flynn Drive on-ramp to Commonwealth Avenue northbound is closed; all general traffic must detour via Coronation Drive.
  • Barrine Drive, located beneath the bridge, is reduced to a single lane with stop-and-go arrangements active between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

In the south, the Monaro Highway Upgrade continues to affect travel times near Hume. Temporary traffic lights are active for northbound traffic at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive. During off-peak hours today, both northbound and southbound carriageways may be reduced to a single lane to facilitate pavement construction.

City Center and Western Suburbs Updates

In the City, Bunda Street remains closed to all traffic between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing due to ongoing hotel and streetscape upgrades. This closure is expected to remain in place until 19 April. Additionally, the western side of London Circuit remains closed for Light Rail Stage 2A works, and Northbourne Avenue is restricted to two lanes in each direction between Alinga Street and Vernon Circle.

In the west, early works for the William Hovell Drive Duplication are underway. While main construction is slated to ramp up shortly, motorists should watch for site preparation activities and reduced speed limits between Drake-Brockman Drive and John Gorton Drive.

Public Transport and Maintenance

Transport Canberra is operating on a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable today. Commuters are reminded that the revised 2026 bus network remains in place to manage the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge disruptions. Rapid services are running every 15 minutes, though travelers should allow at least an additional 15 minutes for any route crossing the lake.

Finally, maintenance crews are scheduled for mowing and asphalt patching along the Tuggeranong Parkway and Gungahlin Drive. Please slow down and observe all temporary signage to ensure the safety of road workers.
