Federal Parliament Returns to Canberra: Superannuation and Biodiversity Bills Headline Monday Session

The Australian Federal Parliament has officially returned to session in Canberra today, Monday, March 23, 2026, marking the start of a pivotal autumn sitting week. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate are meeting at Parliament House to deliberate on a wide range of legislative reforms, ranging from financial regulations to national environmental protections.

The Senate began its day with a focus on several significant bills. Among the top priorities is the Treasury Laws Amendment (Supporting Choice in Superannuation and Other Measures) Bill 2025, which aims to provide Australians with greater flexibility and transparency in managing their retirement savings. Senators are also scheduled to debate the High Seas Biodiversity Bill 2026, a legislative step intended to align Australia’s domestic laws with international maritime conservation efforts. Another critical agenda item for the Senate today is the National Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People Bill 2026, which would establish a dedicated body to advocate for the rights and welfare of Indigenous youth.

In the House of Representatives, proceedings commenced at 10:10 am with the introduction of private members' business. A notable inclusion is the Protecting Australia's Prime Agricultural Land Bill 2026, introduced by the Independent Member for Calare. This bill seeks to implement more rigorous protections for high-value farming land against competing industrial interests. Following the private members' session, the government has prioritized the Health Legislation Amendment (Improving Choice and Transparency for Private Health Consumers) Bill 2026, which is designed to enhance consumer clarity in the private health insurance market.

Key government fiscal business scheduled for today includes:

  • Appropriation Bill (No. 3) 2025-2026, which covers supplementary funding for various government departments.
  • Appropriation Bill (No. 4) 2025-2026, focused on specific capital expenditures and infrastructure projects.
  • The Commonwealth Entities Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, aimed at improving the administrative efficiency of federal agencies.
  • The tabling of documents relating to the National Anti-Racism Framework, which is expected to occur before the midday break.

While Federal Parliament dominates the political landscape in the capital today, the ACT Legislative Assembly is currently in a non-sitting day. The local parliament for the Australian Capital Territory is scheduled to return for its own sitting week tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24. With Question Time set for 2:00 pm in both federal chambers, political activity in Canberra will remain focused on the federal stage for the duration of the day.
