Lane Closures on Commonwealth Avenue and Monaro Highway Highlight Tuesday Commute

Morning Traffic and Transport Overview
Canberra commuters should prepare for a mix of significant roadwork delays and public transport changes this Tuesday, 7 April 2026. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well in the outer suburbs, major arterial projects in the City and Tuggeranong continue to impact travel times. Motorists are advised to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes when traveling through central hubs or onto the Monaro Highway.
New Bus Timetables Launch Today
Transport Canberra has implemented a series of bus timetable improvements starting today, Tuesday, 7 April. These changes affect several high-frequency routes and local services to improve reliability and connection times. Commuters should check their updated schedules before heading to the stop. Key routes with updated timings include:
- Rapid routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.
- Regular local services 56, 57, 58, 59, and 66.
Additionally, while the new Woden Interchange is nearing completion, it is not yet operational; services continue to use the temporary facilities until late April.
Major Roadworks and Arterial Delays
Several major infrastructure projects are at critical stages today, resulting in lane closures and reduced speed limits:
- Commonwealth Avenue: Northbound traffic is currently reduced to a single lane from the Parkes Way on-ramp to Vernon Circle. This restriction is part of the ongoing Light Rail Stage 2A works and will remain in place until late April.
- Monaro Highway: Pavement construction continues near the Lanyon Drive intersection. Temporary traffic lights are active for northbound traffic, and motorists may experience merging delays as the highway is periodically reduced to one lane in each direction during off-peak hours.
- Ngunnawal Roundabout: A specific asphalt resurfacing project is taking place today at the intersection of Galmarra Street and Paul Coe Crescent. Lane closures are in effect from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.
- William Hovell Drive: Early site preparation for the duplication project continues between Drake-Brockman Drive and John Gorton Drive. While all lanes generally remain open, speed limits are reduced near site compounds.
City Center Disruptions
In the heart of the city, travel remains restricted due to the Raising London Circuit project. London Circuit is closed on the western side, and sections of the eastern side between Northbourne Avenue and Theatre Lane are restricted to buses and delivery vehicles only. Furthermore, Bunda Street remains fully closed between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing for hotel-related infrastructure upgrades, with diversions through Genge Street in place until mid-April.
Commuter Tip
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Wednesday, 8 April, the ACT Government will introduce a halved monthly fare cap for public transport users. Today is the final day of the current fare structure, so regular travelers may wish to ensure their MyWay+ accounts are ready for the upcoming savings period.
