Canberra commuters should prepare for a complex Wednesday morning journey as several major infrastructure projects hit critical phases this April. Major arterial roads, including Commonwealth Avenue and the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue, are currently subject to significant lane closures and diversions that will impact travel times throughout the day.

Major Arterial Disruptions

• Commonwealth Avenue: Northbound traffic remains reduced to a single lane between the Parkes Way on-ramp and Vernon Circle. This restriction is part of the ongoing Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal project and is expected to remain in place until late April. Motorists should expect heavy congestion during peak morning hours and are encouraged to consider the Kings Avenue Bridge as an alternative.
• Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue: Significant road closures are in effect at this intersection for ongoing improvement works. These closures are scheduled to remain active until Thursday, 2 April. Clearly marked diversions are in place, but drivers heading toward the airport or Pialligo should allow at least 10 to 15 minutes of additional travel time.
• Monaro Highway: Pavement construction continues near the Lanyon Drive interchange. Temporary traffic lights are active for northbound traffic at the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive intersection. While two lanes are generally maintained during peak periods, be prepared for lane reductions to a single lane in both directions during off-peak hours.

City and Local Roadworks

In the City, Bunda Street remains closed between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing. This closure is part of a major street upgrade and will persist until Sunday, 19 April. Pedestrian access is maintained, but through-traffic should use Alinga Street or Cooyong Street.

In the south, night works are continuing on Sawmill Crescent in Hume for road pavement rehabilitation. While the heaviest impacts occur between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, temporary signage and equipment may affect lane widths during the day. Additionally, site preparation is ramping up for the William Hovell Drive duplication, so commuters in West Belconnen should look out for new site compounds and slightly reduced speed limits near Drake-Brockman Drive.

Transport Canberra services are running to a standard Wednesday schedule, though buses traveling through the City and Commonwealth Avenue corridor may experience delays due to the aforementioned roadworks. Passengers are advised to check the journey planner for real-time adjustments.
