Waste Management: Rescheduled Collections

In observance of the Easter long weekend, the ACT Government advises residents that household bin collection schedules have been adjusted. Due to the Good Friday public holiday yesterday, all bin collections originally scheduled for Friday, April 3, will now take place today, Saturday, April 4, 2026. Residents are requested to place their bins on the kerbside by 7:00 am to ensure they are serviced during this catch-up period.

Public Safety: Double Demerit Points Alert

Transport Canberra and City Services remind all motorists that double demerit points are currently in effect across the Australian Capital Territory. This enforcement period began at 12:00 am on Thursday, April 2, and will continue through 11:59 pm on Monday, April 6, 2026. Double demerits apply to all speeding, seatbelt, and mobile phone offences. With higher traffic volumes expected on major arterial roads today, drivers are urged to exercise patience, avoid fatigue, and strictly adhere to posted speed limits to ensure a safe holiday for all road users.

Infrastructure and Road Closures

Several major infrastructure projects and maintenance activities will impact travel through Central Canberra and the surrounding regions today:

  • Bunda Street: A total closure remains in place on Bunda Street between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing. This closure is necessary for ongoing works and is expected to remain in effect until Sunday, April 19, 2026. Diversions are clearly marked.
  • Commonwealth Avenue Bridge: Partial lane closures continue as part of the bridge renewal project. Motorists should expect minor delays and are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible.
  • Monaro Highway: Ongoing pavement construction continues near the Lanyon Drive intersection. Northbound traffic has been shifted to the eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge. Temporary traffic lights remain in operation.
  • Parkes Place East: The concrete footpath upgrade is ongoing, resulting in a pedestrian closure between King Edward Terrace and Queen Elizabeth Terrace.

Nature Reserve and Park Access

Access to several popular recreational areas is restricted this Saturday due to essential safety upgrades and conservation efforts:

  • Nadjung Mada Nature Reserve: Old Well Station Road is closed to all walkers and cyclists for fire trail upgrades and animal crossing restoration. Work is expected to conclude by late April.
  • Gibraltar Falls: The viewing platform and walking track remain closed while safety infrastructure and signage improvements are completed.
  • Woods Reserve: The campground remains closed for a total facility upgrade. Reopening is scheduled for mid-2026.
  • Rabbit Control: Pest management crews are active today in the Gungahlin region, specifically around Amaroo, Forde, and Harrison. Signage is in place where baiting or control measures are occurring.

Recreation and Sportsgrounds

Most ACT Government turf sportsgrounds have officially reopened as of this week following the conclusion of the autumn renovation period. Maintenance teams have finalized goalpost installations and line markings for the winter sport season. While most grounds are now available for community use, synthetic fields in Nicholls, Holt, and Phillip remain open as primary venues for high-impact training.
