Official Notice: Commonwealth Avenue Traffic Changes and City Maintenance Roundup

Major Commuter Alert: Commonwealth Avenue Lane Reductions
Commuters and residents are advised of significant changes to traffic flow starting Monday, 30 March 2026. While the full weekend closure of Commonwealth Avenue between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle is scheduled to lift at 5:00 am this morning, motorists should prepare for immediate follow-on disruptions. To facilitate ongoing Light Rail Stage 2A works, a southbound lane reduction will be implemented between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle, remaining in effect until late April. Additionally, a short section of Commonwealth Avenue southbound near Parkes Way will remain restricted to a single lane until 31 March. Motorists are encouraged to allow for significant delays during peak hour or utilize the provided detours.
City Services and Infrastructure Works
The ACT Government is continuing several high-priority infrastructure and maintenance projects across the capital this week. Residents should note the following active notices:
- Bunda Street Closure: Bunda Street remains closed to all traffic between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing. This closure is necessary for precinct upgrades and is expected to continue until 19 April 2026.
- Majura Road Intersections: Improvements at the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue are ongoing. Current closures and diversions at this site will remain in place until Thursday, 2 April.
- Pavement and Path Maintenance: Asphalt patching and resurfacing works are scheduled for Franklin, Moncrieff, Taylor, and Greenway today. Street sweeping crews are also active in the City, Braddon, Dickson, and the Kingston Foreshore throughout the morning.
- Belconnen Upgrades: Construction continues on the Kuringa Drive path network. Site preparation is also underway for the new Dunlop playground toilet facilities.
Public Health and Environmental Advisories
Current health and safety notices for Monday include critical updates regarding local waterways and public spaces. Recent testing has confirmed that the swimming area at Tharwa Bridge remains closed due to high bacteria levels. Similar closures are in effect for Bargang and Yerra beaches. Residents are advised to avoid all primary contact with these waters until further notice from ACT Health.
Furthermore, rabbit control operations are scheduled today in Grevillea District Park, Amaroo, Forde, Harrison, Hill Reserve, and Nicholls. Owners of domestic pets are urged to keep animals on leads and strictly follow all signage in the vicinity of these operations. In the parklands, mowing is underway in Strathnairn, Franklin, and Ngunnawal to manage autumn growth.
National Park and Sportsground Closures
For those planning recreational activities, please be aware that most ACT Government turf sportsgrounds are currently closed for winter sport preparation. These grounds are slated to reopen on Wednesday, 1 April. Additionally, Woods Reserve campground and the Gibraltar Falls viewing platform in Namadgi National Park remain closed for major infrastructure and safety upgrades. These sites are not expected to return to public service until mid-2026.
