Traffic Disruptions: Danish Royal Visit

ACT Policing has issued an urgent advisory regarding significant traffic disruptions expected throughout the day on Monday, 16 March 2026. Due to the Danish Royal visit, intermittent road closures and motorcade movements will impact travel until approximately 8:00 PM. Primary areas of concern include the roads leading to and from Canberra Airport, Yarralumla, Deakin, and the Parliamentary Triangle. Commuters heading to the airport for evening flights are strongly encouraged to leave early and allow for unexpected delays. Motorists are reminded to follow all police directions and refrain from illegal maneuvers, such as crossing median strips or verges, to bypass congestion.

Major Roadworks and Infrastructure Projects

Several significant infrastructure projects will impact Canberra's road network starting today, Monday, 16 March:

  • Majura Road Intersection Upgrade: Major works have commenced at the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue. The slip lane from Fairbairn Avenue onto Majura Road is closed. Traffic is being diverted along the Majura Parkway, with motorists required to use the Tambreet Street exit to turn around and access the Majura Park precinct via Meddhung Road. These works are expected to continue until early April.
  • Kuringa Drive Path Construction: Civil works for the Kuringa Drive path network improvements officially begin today. Residents should expect heavy machinery and changed conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in the Belconnen region.
  • Bunda Street Closure: The City’s Bunda Street remains closed to all traffic between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing. This closure for essential precinct upgrades is scheduled to remain in place until 19 April 2026.

Public Transport and Bus Service Alerts

Transport Canberra has implemented several service diversions to accommodate ongoing construction and road upgrades:

  • Route 54 Diversion: As of the first service this morning, Route 54 will no longer service the Majura Park shopping precinct. Bus stops 5103 (Catalina Drive) and 5110 (Dakota Drive) are closed. Passengers should instead utilize the temporary bus stop established on Majura Road, located after the Spitfire Avenue roundabout.
  • Tuggeranong Bus Stop Closure: Bus stop 1279 is closed effective today, 16 March, through to 30 March 2026. Local signage is in place to direct passengers to the nearest alternative boarding points.

City Maintenance and Winter Preparation

City Services crews are beginning the annual transition of public assets for the winter season. While most government turf sportsgrounds will officially close for a two-week renovation period starting Wednesday, 18 March, preparatory works including the installation of goal posts across Woden, Weston Creek, and Belconnen occur today. Additional maintenance schedules for Monday include mowing in Dunlop and Flynn, as well as tree pruning and young tree care in Scullin, Page, and Macgregor. Rabbit control programs remain active in Grevillea District Park and reserves within Amaroo and Forde; residents are advised to keep domestic pets on leads when near these areas.
