Public Notice: Good Friday Service Adjustments and Holiday Travel Advisories

Public Holiday and School Schedule
Friday, 3 April 2026, is observed as a public holiday in the Australian Capital Territory for Good Friday. Residents are advised that most government offices, libraries, and non-essential public services will be closed. This date also marks the official commencement of the Term 1 school holiday period for ACT public schools, which is scheduled to run through Monday, 20 April 2026. Regular classes will resume on Tuesday, 21 April.
Major Road and Infrastructure Impact
Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) has issued several active traffic advisories for Friday, 3 April, coinciding with the start of the Easter long weekend. Motorists are encouraged to plan for delays on the following routes:
- Commonwealth Avenue: Southbound traffic remains reduced to a single lane between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle. This restriction is necessary for Light Rail Stage 2A works, including the installation of track slabs and utility improvements. This arrangement will remain in place until late April.
- Commonwealth Avenue Bridge: Ongoing partial closures persist as part of the bridge renewal project. Northbound traffic is currently redirected across the southbound span.
- Bunda Street: The section between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing remains fully closed to vehicular traffic for public realm improvements. Diversions are in place through 19 April 2026.
- Monaro Highway: Northbound lanes near the intersection with Lanyon Drive may experience intermittent reductions to one lane during off-peak periods due to ongoing pavement construction.
- Parkes Place East: A footpath closure is in effect between 30 March and 10 April 2026 to facilitate a concrete path upgrade.
Parks, Recreation, and Environmental Health
While most ACT Government turf sportsgrounds have officially reopened for the winter season as of 1 April, several environmental and maintenance closures remain in effect:
- Water Quality Alerts: Bargang and Yerra beaches, along with the swimming area at Tharwa Bridge, remain closed to primary contact and swimming due to elevated bacteria levels. Residents should consult the latest water quality maps before visiting local waterways.
- National Park Access: In Namadgi National Park, the Woods Reserve campground remains closed for a complete facility upgrade. Additionally, the Gibraltar Falls viewing platform and associated walking tracks are closed for safety infrastructure improvements.
- Rabbit Control: Pest management crews are active this week at Grevillea District Park. Visitors are asked to keep dogs on leashes and follow all posted signage.
Legislative and Industry Updates
The ACT Government has formally introduced the Civil Law (Wrongs) Amendment Bill 2026. This legislation is designed to protect personal injury claimants and victim-survivors of child abuse from 'claim farming' practices. Furthermore, industry stakeholders are reminded that the ACT will transition to the National Construction Code 2025 starting 1 May 2026, providing a 12-month alignment period with neighboring jurisdictions.
