Public Notice: Infrastructure Works and St. Patrick’s Day Traffic Advisory

Road and Traffic Infrastructure
Major infrastructure projects are continuing across the city, impacting traffic flow in the CBD and key intersections. The ACT Government advises motorists to plan ahead for the following active closures on Tuesday, 17 March 2026:
- London Circuit: The western side of London Circuit remains closed to regular traffic for the duration of the Light Rail Stage 2A construction. Additionally, London Circuit East, between Northbourne Avenue and Theatre Lane, is closed to all motorists and cyclists to facilitate the relocation of underground services.
- Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue: Intersection upgrade works have commenced as of Monday, 16 March. Significant road closures and diversions are in place at this intersection and will remain active through 2 April 2026.
- Bunda Street: A full closure is in effect between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing. This section will remain inaccessible until Sunday, 19 April 2026, while essential streetscape and utility works are completed.
- Commonwealth Avenue Bridge: A partial bridge closure remains active as part of ongoing structural refurbishments. Motorists should expect lane merging and slight delays when crossing Lake Burley Griffin.
Park Maintenance and Public Land Updates
City Services crews are performing scheduled maintenance and conservation tasks across the capital’s green spaces. Residents are advised of the following activities:
- English Garden: General horticultural maintenance is underway. While the garden remains open, visitors are asked to follow all directional signage around work zones.
- Grevillea District Park: Essential rabbit control operations are currently in progress. Pet owners are advised to keep animals on leads and observe all temporary exclusion fencing in the area.
- Sportsground Preparation: Most ACT Government turf sportsgrounds will be open on Tuesday; however, they are scheduled to close for a two-week period starting Wednesday, 18 March 2026. This closure is necessary to prepare the surfaces for the upcoming winter sports season.
- Gibraltar Falls: The viewing platform and walking track remain closed to the public until mid-2026 for safety infrastructure improvements.
Community Events and Health Advisories
The Canberra Balloon Spectacular continues today through 22 March 2026. Spectators are reminded that while the event offers a unique morning display, it may cause minor congestion around the parliamentary triangle and lake foreshore between 6:00 am and 9:00 am. For those celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, authorities remind the public to use designated drivers or public transport, as increased pedestrian activity is expected in the Civic and Braddon precincts. Additionally, while the recent measles alert monitoring period for airport sites has concluded, ACT Health encourages all residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date following recent travel-related cases in the region.
