Significant Delays on Commonwealth Avenue as Bridge Renewal and Resurfacing Continue

Overview of Today's Traffic
Commuters across the ACT should prepare for a mix of major infrastructure works and localized road repairs this Tuesday, 24 March 2026. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on most peripheral routes, central arteries—particularly those connecting the City to the Parliamentary Triangle—remain heavily impacted by the ongoing Light Rail Stage 2A and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal projects. Transport authorities advise allowing at least 15 to 20 minutes of additional travel time if your commute takes you through the city center or across Lake Burley Griffin.
Major Impacts on Commonwealth Avenue
The most significant disruption continues to be the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal Project. The northbound span of the bridge remains completely closed to all traffic as part of the most significant strengthening and widening effort since the structure opened in 1963. To manage the load, the southbound span has been reconfigured to carry traffic in both directions. Currently, there are two northbound lanes available—one for general traffic and one dedicated to buses and emergency services—while only one southbound lane is open for general traffic heading toward Parliament House.
Drivers should also be aware that Barrine Drive, located beneath the bridge, is reduced to a single lane for a 200-meter stretch. This restriction is in effect between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm today, with "stop and go" traffic control arrangements in place. This is likely to impact access to the Acton Waterfront and nearby parking precincts.
Local Roadworks and Resurfacing
ACT City Services has scheduled several resurfacing and repair tasks today as part of the annual maintenance program. Lane closures and localized delays are expected between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm on the following streets:
- Carstensz Street: Impacted from Jansz Crescent to the end of the street.
- La Perouse Street: Lane closures between Murray Crescent and Flinders Way, including the service road.
- Quiros Street: Restricted movement from Monaro Crescent to Golden Grove.
- Throsby Crescent: Lane closures from Stuart Street to the end of the road.
For those traveling later this evening, night works will commence on Well Station Drive. A full road closure will be in place between Flemington Road and Kings Canyon Street from 9:00 pm tonight until 5:00 am Wednesday morning for asphalt patching. Additionally, the roundabout at Majura Road and Spitfire Avenue will see lane closures starting from 9:30 pm.
Public Transport and Bus Alerts
Transport Canberra has confirmed that several service adjustments remain in place. Bus stop 4415 is closed today and will remain out of service until the end of the Wednesday shift. Furthermore, Route 54 continues to run on a diversion around Majura Park due to the ongoing intersection improvements at Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue. Commuters are encouraged to use real-time apps to track service delays caused by the increased congestion on the Commonwealth Avenue corridor.
