Significant Peak-Hour Delays Expected

Canberra's morning commute for Thursday, 2 April 2026, is expected to be significantly slower than usual due to several major infrastructure milestones and road maintenance projects peaking simultaneously. The most critical impact for north-bound travelers is on Commonwealth Avenue, where traffic is currently constrained by major construction works.

Major Artery Alert: Commonwealth Avenue

Since earlier this week, Commonwealth Avenue has been reduced to a single lane northbound from the Parkes Way on-ramp through to Vernon Circle. This restriction is part of the ongoing Light Rail Stage 2A works and is expected to cause substantial backlogs during the morning peak as vehicles from the south merge into a single through-lane. Commuters arriving from the Southside should consider using Kings Avenue or the Tuggeranong Parkway as alternatives to reach the northern side of the city. These restrictions are currently scheduled to remain in place throughout the month.

Final Day of Majura Road Closures

Today marks the final scheduled day of major road closures at the intersection of Majura Road and Fairbairn Avenue. While this rehabilitation work is nearly complete, diversions remain in place this morning. Motorists heading toward the Canberra Airport or Pialligo should allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time, as traffic is being rerouted through surrounding service roads before the intersection is expected to fully reopen this evening.

City Center and Inner North Disruptions

In the City center, several key routes remain restricted:

  • Bunda Street: Remains closed to all through-traffic between Genge Street and Scotts Crossing for precinct revitalisation works. This closure is scheduled to continue until mid-April.
  • London Circuit West: This remains a major construction zone for the light rail extension. Fencing and site compounds are established between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue, requiring all through-traffic to utilize the raised London Circuit East sections.
  • Pedestrian Safety: Cyclists and pedestrians are advised that shared paths near the Acton Waterfront and City Hill have been narrowed. Please follow signage and be prepared to dismount near active machinery.

Southside and West Belconnen Updates

Southside commuters continue to face disruptions on the Monaro Highway. Northbound traffic at the Lanyon Drive intersection is currently managed by temporary traffic lights to facilitate the final stages of the flyover bridge construction. Additionally, night-time road rehabilitation continues on Sawmill Crescent in Hume, with some lane closures possibly lingering into the early morning hours.

For those in West Belconnen, site establishment and surveying works are underway along William Hovell Drive between John Gorton Drive and Drake-Brockman Drive. While all lanes are open during the peak, speed limits have been reduced to 40km/h in active work zones to protect ground crews.

Public Transport and Commuter Tips

Transport Canberra reports that the temporary city bus interchange arrangements remain in place. Passengers are encouraged to allow extra time for bus travel, as surface road congestion on Commonwealth Avenue is impacting the reliability of several Blue Rapid and local services. Commuters are advised to check the journey planner for the most up-to-date departure times before leaving home.
