Emergency Alert: Total Fire Ban in Effect

The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) has declared a 48-hour Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) for the Australian Capital Territory, active until 11:59 PM on Friday, 6 February 2026. With a forecast Fire Danger Rating of “Extreme,” residents are urged to review their Bushfire Survival Plans immediately. Under the TOBAN, all fires in the open air are strictly prohibited, and high-risk activities such as welding or grinding are banned. Gas barbecues in public parks and reserves have been disabled, though electric barbecues remain available. Furthermore, the Nature Conservation (Closed Reserves—Total Fire Ban) Declaration 2026 (No 3) has officially closed several nature reserves and forested areas across the territory to ensure public safety.

Major Road & Infrastructure Projects

Significant traffic disruptions are scheduled to begin this evening as part of the Light Rail Stage 2A and bridge construction projects. Commuters should take note of the following notices:

  • Commonwealth Avenue: The northbound ramp from Commonwealth Avenue to Parkes Way westbound will be closed starting at 8:00 PM on Friday, 6 February, until 6:00 AM Monday. Detours will be directed through Vernon Circle and Edinburgh Avenue.
  • Coppins Crossing Road: A contingency closure is in place for Friday, 6 February, between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue to facilitate concrete pouring for the Molonglo River Bridge.
  • Mugga Lane: Evening pavement resurfacing continues at the Resource Management Centre; motorists should expect minor delays during after-hours operations.
  • Tidbinbilla: Demolition works at the former visitor centre are ongoing, resulting in minor traffic management changes near the site.

Public Health and Safety Advisories

ACT Health and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) have issued a nationwide recall for several sunscreen products, including specific batches of Banana Boat Baby Zinc and Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Zinc lotions, due to ingredient separation concerns. Additionally, the Health Protection Service reminds residents that Yerra Beach remains closed to swimmers due to elevated bacteria levels. Weekly water quality monitoring is ongoing for other popular sites at Lake Burley Griffin and the Murrumbidgee River.

Suburban Maintenance and Community Services

City Services crews are conducting routine maintenance across several regions this Friday. Mowing is currently prioritized in Chifley, Curtin, Lyons, Phillip, and McKellar. Path repairs and pavement maintenance are also scheduled for Fisher, Garran, and Waramanga. Residents in Woden are advised that street sweeping is underway at the local shops and Cooleman Court. Finally, the Lifeline Canberra Bookfair opens today at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), with doors open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
