Canberra commuters are advised that today, Sunday, 1 February 2026, marks the final day of the significant month-long construction blitz on Northbourne Avenue. The major arterial road remains fully closed in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street as crews finalize track installation for the Light Rail Stage 2A extension. This closure, which includes the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street, is scheduled to lift at 5:00 am tomorrow morning, just in time for the Monday morning peak.

Motorists should continue to use diverted routes via Parkes Way and Commonwealth Avenue. Local access is maintained under strict traffic control, but through-traffic is encouraged to avoid the Civic area entirely today to minimize congestion.

Public Transport: Last Call for Holiday Timetables

Today is the final day for the Transport Canberra summer holiday bus timetable. Commuters are also reminded that City Interchange platforms 1, 2, 3, and 4 remain closed until the end of service tonight. Temporary boarding locations are in place across the city center. This coincides with the launch of the updated 2026 bus network, which officially begins tomorrow, Monday, 2 February. Weekend Roadworks and Resealing Alerts

In addition to the major works in Civic, several suburban road maintenance projects are underway today. Drivers should expect lane closures and minor delays in the following areas:

• Dunlop: Resealing work is occurring on Traeger Street, Durkin Street, Lovely Close, and Buckmaster Crescent. Lane closures are expected between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm.
• Lyons & Waramanga: Pavement repairs on Launceston Street and the Tuggeranong Parkway will continue into the evening. A night work schedule begins at 7:00 pm on the Parkway between Sulwood Drive and Hindmarsh Drive, with detours in place until 6:00 am Monday.
• Mugga Lane: Resurfacing at the Resource Management Centre begins this evening. While mostly occurring outside operating hours, early evening visitors should be aware of changing traffic patterns.

While the Northbourne Avenue closure ends tonight, the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal continues to impact travel times. From tomorrow, southbound morning peak travel is expected to increase by approximately 13 minutes.
