Morning Commute Overview

Canberra commuters should prepare for significant travel time increases this morning, Tuesday, 10 February 2026. As the second week of the first school term begins, the full impact of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal project is being felt across the central road network. Traffic modeling indicates that southbound morning peak travel across Commonwealth Avenue is seeing delays of approximately 13 minutes. To help mitigate these delays, a dedicated bus and emergency services priority lane is currently operational northbound into the city.

Major Arterial Impacts

  • Commonwealth Avenue & Parkes Way: In addition to the bridge renewal, construction for Light Rail Stage 2A continues to cause intermittent lane closures. Motorists should be aware of reduced speed limits and potential sudden lane merges between the Parkes Way Bridge and the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.
  • London Circuit & Northbourne Avenue: London Circuit West remains closed between Northbourne and Edinburgh Avenues. Additionally, Northbourne Avenue is reduced to two lanes in both directions between Alinga Street and Vernon Circle. These closures are expected to remain in place for the duration of the light rail construction.
  • Monaro Highway: Northbound traffic has been switched to the eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge in Hume. While two lanes are maintained during peak periods, resealing works between Royalla Solar Farm and Johnson Drive will require lane closures between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM today.
  • Tuggeranong Parkway: Nightly asphalt resurfacing continues northbound between Sulwood Drive and Hindmarsh Drive. While lanes are scheduled to reopen by 6:00 AM, early morning commuters may still encounter residual equipment movements and reduced speed zones.

Local Roadworks and Repairs

Several suburban projects will impact local traffic throughout the day:

  • Belconnen: College Street is undergoing resealing between Benjamin Way and Cohen Street. Lane closures will be active from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Westbound lane closures on the Barton Highway for patching will also occur during the evening hours starting at 8:00 PM.
  • Yarralumla: Asphalt patching is scheduled for Novar Street, between Kintore Crescent and Bentham Street, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • Kambah & Phillip: Utility works on Athllon Drive have reduced the speed limit to 40km/h between Drakeford Drive and Vosper Street. Maintenance near the intersection of Colbee Court and Shea Street in Phillip remains ongoing.

Public Transport Alerts

The revised Transport Canberra bus network and timetable, which launched last week, remains in effect. Passengers are reminded that Rapid routes 2 and 3 in Belconnen have been modified, with new local services (Routes 12 and 13) covering segments west of Westfield Belconnen. On John Gorton Drive, shelter relocation works at stops 2809, 2810, and 2836 are scheduled for completion today; however, commuters should expect minor diversions around the work crews until the final assets are secured this afternoon.
