Monday Morning Traffic Overview

Canberra commuters should prepare for a complex start to the work week this Monday, February 9, 2026. A combination of ongoing light rail construction, the massive Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal project, and several new roadwork sites across the Territory will necessitate extra travel time. Following severe weather warnings over the weekend, motorists are also advised to stay alert for localized debris or water on road surfaces during the early morning hours.

Significant Roadworks and Closures

  • Commonwealth Avenue: The northbound ramp to Parkes Way westbound is scheduled to reopen at 6:00 AM on Monday following a weekend closure for water main installations. Early morning commuters may encounter residual congestion as the site is cleared. Additionally, expect ongoing lane reductions near the bridge as the National Capital Authority continues its structural renewal program.
  • London Circuit: The western side of London Circuit remains closed to all through-traffic. This long-term closure, part of the Light Rail Stage 2A project, has diverted heavy volumes onto Northbourne Avenue, which remains reduced to two lanes in each direction between Alinga Street and Vernon Circle.
  • Belconnen & Gungahlin: New road maintenance is scheduled for College Street in Belconnen, with lane closures in effect from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for resealing. Asphalt patching also continues across the Gungahlin region, specifically in Crace, Franklin, and Ngunnawal, which may cause minor localized delays on collector roads.
  • Monaro Highway: Resealing works are set to begin between Royalla Solar Farm and Johnson Drive. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, impacting those traveling between the Snowy Monaro region and Tuggeranong.

Regional Commuter Alert

For those traveling from the coast or the Snowy Mountains, two major projects begin today, February 9. On the Kings Highway, slope stabilization works near Brown Mountain will see the eastbound lane closed, with traffic diverted into a single shared lane under a 40km/h speed limit. In the Snowy Monaro, resheeting begins on Westons Road and Wollondibby Road, with short delays expected throughout the day.

Public Transport and MyWay+ Updates

Passengers are reminded that the updated Term 1 bus network, which launched last week, is now in full effect to accommodate the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge diversions. While previous technical issues with the MyWay+ app's real-time data have been addressed, commuters are encouraged to verify their routes via the Journey Planner before leaving home. Light rail services will maintain their standard high-frequency weekday schedule, though platform changes at the City Interchange remain in place.

Commuter Advice

To avoid the heaviest congestion, motorists should aim to pass through the Glenloch Interchange and the City Hill area before 8:00 AM. If traveling toward the CBD from the south, consider using the Monaro Highway and Morshead Drive as an alternative to the Commonwealth Avenue bridge to bypass the construction bottleneck.
