Public Notice: Major Traffic Detours and Infrastructure Works for Saturday, 14 February

Light Rail Stage 2A: Weekend Construction Blitz
The ACT Government has issued a priority notice for significant road closures affecting the central business district this weekend as part of the Light Rail Stage 2A extension. Residents and visitors are advised that a major construction milestone involving the bridge deck over Parkes Way will necessitate the full closure of key arterial routes.
The following closures are active for Saturday, 14 February 2026:
- Commonwealth Avenue (Northbound): A full closure is in effect between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle. This closure commenced at 8:00 PM on Thursday and will remain in place until 6:00 AM Monday, 16 February.
- Parkes Way Westbound Ramp: The ramp leading to Commonwealth Avenue southbound is closed to all traffic from 8:00 PM Friday through to Monday morning.
- London Circuit East: Motorists should anticipate intermittent lane reductions between Commonwealth Avenue and Constitution Avenue to facilitate utility works.
Detours are currently in place via London Circuit East and Edinburgh Avenue for those traveling southbound, while northbound traffic is being diverted through the Parkes Way on-ramp toward the Lawson Crescent exit. While pedestrian and cyclist access is being maintained via the Acton Overpass and shared paths, commuters are urged to allow at least 20 minutes of additional travel time.
Public Transport: Interim Bus Network in Effect
Transport Canberra reminds all passengers that the new interim bus network, which launched earlier this month, remains the active schedule for the 2026 school year. Due to the ongoing works at the Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue intersection, several city interchange platforms have been relocated.
- Buses normally departing from the main City Interchange have been moved to temporary platforms on Mort Street.
- Light rail services continue to operate as normal between Gungahlin Place and Sandford Street, with rail replacement buses servicing the southern leg into the city.
Seasonal Health and Safety Advisory: Bushfire Season
The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) maintains a high alert status as we remain in the peak of the 2025-26 bushfire season, which officially continues until 31 March. While no Total Fire Ban is currently active for Saturday, 14 February, the ESA advises that hot and dry conditions typical of mid-February increase the risk of grassfires on the urban fringe.
Property owners are encouraged to ensure gutters remain clear and to review their Bushfire Survival Plans. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is displayed on electronic signage across the Canberra road network and should be checked before entering nature reserves or rural areas.
City Maintenance and Public Spaces
City Services will be conducting routine landscape maintenance in Commonwealth Park and the Parliamentary Triangle throughout the weekend. Visitors are asked to follow all temporary signage near the National Multicultural Festival footprint as final site remediation continues following the conclusion of the event last weekend.
