Light Rail Construction: Significant Traffic Disruptions

The ACT Government has issued a major traffic alert for Saturday, 28 February 2026, as work on Light Rail Stage 2A intensifies. Significant sections of the central road network will be closed to facilitate essential infrastructure upgrades and the installation of utilities. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and allow for substantial delays.

  • Commonwealth Avenue: The northbound lanes between the Parkes Way on-ramps and Vernon Circle will be fully closed from 8:00 PM Friday, 27 February until 5:00 AM Monday, 2 March. Southbound travel will be restricted to a single lane during this period.
  • Late Night Full Closure: From 11:30 PM on Saturday, 28 February until 6:00 AM Monday morning, Commonwealth Avenue will be closed in both directions between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle.
  • Parkes Way: Eastbound lanes will be closed between Edinburgh Avenue and Coranderrk Street during the late-night Saturday window.
  • London Circuit East: Both directions will be closed between Commonwealth Avenue and Constitution Avenue to support bridge deck works.

Detours for all road traffic, including buses, will be in place. While no bus stops are expected to be missed, diversions may add to travel times. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the shared path over Parkes Way as some traditional routes may be redirected.

Enlighten Festival Traffic Management

The Enlighten Festival continues this Saturday, bringing nightly traffic management to the Parliamentary Triangle. From 4:00 PM until midnight, road closures will be in effect on King George Terrace, King Edward Terrace, and Queen Elizabeth Terrace between Parkes Place East and Parkes Place West. Access to the National Library of Australia car park remains available via Parkes Place West, though most other vehicles will requires special permits or accessibility passes to enter the immediate precinct.

Public Health Advisories

Canberra Health Services has maintained an active Measles case alert following a confirmed infection earlier this week. Health officials are monitoring national surveillance data, which shows a rise in cases linked to international arrivals. Residents are urged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to monitor for symptoms such as fever and a distinctive rash.

Additionally, the 2026 Influenza Vaccination Program has officially commenced. New program advice for health professionals and the general public was released on 27 February, highlighting the availability of vaccines ahead of the winter season.

Waterway and Park Closures

The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate has confirmed that several beaches remain closed this weekend due to elevated bacteria levels. Impacted sites include Yerra, Bargang, Bimbi, Dulwa, and Nengi Bamir beaches. Residents should avoid primary contact with these waters until further notice.

In Namadgi National Park, the Woods Reserve campground and the Gibraltar Falls viewing platform remain closed for long-term facility upgrades. Minor traffic impacts also continue near Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve due to the ongoing demolition and site rehabilitation of the former visitor centre.
