Public Notice: Road Closures and Infrastructure Updates for February 5

Infrastructure Alert: Coppins Crossing Road Temporary Closure
The ACT Government has issued a priority notice regarding a scheduled partial day closure of Coppins Crossing Road on Thursday, 5 February 2026. To facilitate a major concrete pour on the recently installed precast deck slabs for the new Molonglo River Bridge, the road will be closed to all traffic from 2:00 am to 3:00 pm. The closure affects the section between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue. This work is part of the broader project to transform the Molonglo region and better connect suburbs like Denman Prospect and Whitlam to the city center.
- Southbound Detour: Motorists traveling from Belconnen should use William Hovell Drive, take the off-ramp to Parkes Way, and merge onto the Tuggeranong Parkway.
- Northbound Detour: Residents in the Molonglo Valley should take John Gorton Drive to Cotter Road, then follow the ramp onto the Tuggeranong Parkway, exiting at the Glenloch interchange to merge onto William Hovell Drive.
In recognition of the first week of the school term, the road is scheduled to reopen by 3:00 pm to minimize disruption for school pick-up activity and the afternoon peak period. Motorists are encouraged to avoid travel during peak periods where possible and allow extra time for their journeys.
Light Rail Stage 2A: Ongoing Traffic Disruptions
Commuters are advised that construction for Light Rail Stage 2A continues to impact the city center and major corridors. As of Thursday, 5 February, the following restrictions remain in place to ensure the safety of workers and the public:
- Commonwealth Avenue: A short section of Commonwealth Avenue southbound near Parkes Way remains reduced to a single lane. This restriction is essential for ongoing Parkes Way bridge deck works and is expected to stay in place until late March.
- London Circuit: London Circuit West remains closed between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue. Heavy vehicle movements are expected as service relocations and streetscape improvements continue.
Legislative Notice: Firearm Safety Reforms
The ACT Government is moving to introduce the Firearms (Public Safety) Amendment Bill 2026 to the Legislative Assembly this week. These reforms are designed to strengthen community safety by implementing stricter ownership limits and addressing the emerging risks posed by 3D-printing technology. The proposed Bill includes a limit of five firearms for most license-holders and will criminalize the possession of digital blueprints used to manufacture illegal weapons. These changes follow recent national discussions on firearm classification and public safety.
Community Notice: Mabo Anniversary Exhibition
A special exhibition commemorating the landmark Mabo v Queensland (No. 2) decision is available for public viewing starting Thursday, 5 February. The exhibition will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, offering a historical perspective on the legal and social significance of the High Court's ruling. Members of the community are invited to attend this free educational event to reflect on this pivotal moment in Australian history.
